Overview
Continuous improvements to medical equipment technology allows healthcare providers take better care of patients. However, who takes care of the equipment?
Biomedical Engineering Technologists, graduates of the Biomedical Engineering Technology (BET) program, are trained professionals who operate, maintain, troubleshoot and repair medical equipment.
The 2-year BET degree prepares students to enter the workforce in this expanding, technical field. Our curriculum includes:
- hands-on medical equipment instruction covering operation, inspection procedures, preventative maintenance and troubleshooting
- classroom instruction in electronics, physiology, chemistry, computer networking and more
- experience working with patient monitors, defibrillators, pacemakers, infusion devices, electrosurgical units, and anesthesia machines, just to name a few
- and an internship at one of over 50 approved healthcare facilities in the greater Pittsburgh region in addition to internship opportunities outside of the Pittsburgh area
Many US states and territories require professional licensure/certification to be employed. The BET program fully prepares students for employment as a biomedical engineering technician as well as for CBET certification. A PE license is not required for employment.

The A.S. in Biomedical Engineering Technology at Penn State New Kensington is accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org, under the commission’s General Criteria and Program Criteria for Healthcare Engineering Technology and Similarly Named Programs.
